ReCut for your website: a plain-English guide
This guide explains, without technical language, what ReCut lets you do on your own website or staff portal — and where the current limits are.
What it is
ReCut lets you make, update and show videos inside your own website. Your team edits videos in ReCut, and the finished video plays on your site in a small window we provide.
When you publish a new version, every place the video appears updates straight away. The link and the code on your website never change.
Showing private videos to your people
You can keep a video private and still show it to your staff or customers. Your website asks ReCut for a short-lived pass each time someone opens the page. The pass only works on the websites you name and stops working after the time you choose.
If someone copies the video link and shares it elsewhere, it won't play.
Knowing who watched
Your website gives each viewer your own reference, such as an employee number. The player tells your website when that person starts, pauses, skips, reaches 25, 50, 75 and 90 percent, and finishes.
These updates go only to your website. ReCut does not keep the names or numbers of your viewers. Your own system keeps the record, so you stay in control of personal data.
Training systems
If you use a training system such as Moodle, Cornerstone or Workday, our helper can turn the watch updates into the standard report format those systems accept (called xAPI). This also happens on your website, not on ReCut.
Editing inside your website
You can place the ReCut editor inside your own portal. Your website opens it for one project at a time, with a pass that says whether the person can only look, can edit, or can also send the video for approval.
Work sent from your portal always waits for an owner or admin in your ReCut workspace to approve it before viewers see it. If someone is already editing the same project on recut.stream, saving from your portal waits until they finish.
Finding your videos
Your systems can list and search the videos in your workspace and look up one video's details and release history. Drafts and releases still waiting for approval are never shown.
What it doesn't do yet
Uploading footage, creating projects and publishing are not available through the connection yet — your team does these on recut.stream or in the embedded editor.
The embedded editor can't upload or import new footage. The embedded player and editor can both show your logo, your company name and your accent colour, in a light or dark look, set by your server when it opens the editor.
ReCut doesn't provide viewing reports itself; your website builds them from the player updates. There is no download of view counts through the connection yet.
Keeping things safe
Your website uses a secret workspace key that only your server should hold — never put it in a web page. Each key can make up to 120 requests a minute, and you can have up to 20 keys. An admin can switch any key off instantly in Settings.
Videos under a copyright or content review are hidden from every connection until the review is resolved.
